Founded in 2022 and registered with the Patents and Companies Registration Agency (PACRA) in Zambia, the Institute for Research and Knowledge Translation in Africa (IRKTA) is a leading consultancy firm dedicated to Research, Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E), Knowledge Translation (KT), and capacity building across Africa in health and allied sectors. At the core of its work is gender integration and responsiveness. With its headquarters in Lusaka, Zambia, IRKTA also has a growing presence in Nairobi, Kenya.

To achieve an empowered Africa, a strengthened and equipped workforce is critical. IRKTA promotes, advocates for, and develops localized research and knowledge translation solutions that embrace evidence-based policy and decision-making, practice, and programming. We achieve this through strengthening both individual and institutional capacities essential to addressing local challenges, while considering cross-cutting elements such as responsiveness, ethics, equity, gender, and sustainability.

Historically, sustainable development across Africa has relied heavily on support from international partners. However, externally driven solutions and development models often lack sensitivity to local settings, cultures, and socioeconomic realities, resulting in interventions that are ineffective or unsustainable. Collaboration among African nations remains limited, yet it is vital for conducting locally relevant research, knowledge translation (KT) and policy and decision making. Strengthening such partnerships is key to driving development, improving health outcomes and addressing shared challenges effectively.
At IRKTA, we champion substantial investment in locally relevant research, knowledge translation, and the development of homegrown, sustainable solutions for transformative development. Our value proposition centers on leveraging data and research to deliver evidence-based, actionable insights that empower informed decision-making and innovation. This approach creates tangible value for businesses, governments, and communities.

IRKTA finances its operations through grant proposals, consultancy fees, and strategic collaborations and partnerships with local, regional, and international partners. A percentage of IRKTA’s profits is reinvested into communities through corporate social responsibility (CSR) and other community service initiatives.
IRKTA acknowledges the need for African countries to collaborate in investing in meaningful research and KT initiatives to influence policy and create positive community impact. Western-driven development models often fall short of addressing local needs comprehensively. Thus, IRKTA seeks to establish branches in various African countries to amplify a unified African voice, foster regional collaboration, and implement context-relevant solutions.
Through this expansion, IRKTA empowers local players to promote evidence-based, homegrown solutions applicable at all levels from national to community. Regional branches will serve as hubs for localized research, KMT initiatives, and capacity building tailored to the unique development challenges of each region.Monday
